One small step for Mums Enterprise, one giant leap for Mum Kind

November 15, 2016

This Saturday 12th November was the day I delivered my last ever Little Fish client event. How very apt that it was the very same weekend as a Supermoon.

The reason why it’s very apt is because I have decided to focus on growing the business I launched after my experience of launching Little Fish instead of returning to my city job after maternity leave.  That is the Mums Enterprise Roadshow and the saying ‘Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land amongst the stars’ is behind it all. How the brand looks, feels and our values. So the Supermoon this weekend is a total coincidence but what a cool one - it is like a sign and i'll take it as one :)

For two and a half years I have been organising corporate events on behalf of some pretty cool clients, notably the National Apprenticeship Service who were my very first client back in October 2014 and were my very last as I organised their entry into the Lord Mayor’s Procession on Saturday 12th November,

It’s also the start of global entrepreneurship week this week and I am closing a business which would appear to go against the grain. But Little Fish was a stepping stone to my real dedication in life which is to make sure that Mums Enterprise Ltd continues, grows and delivers even more events so we can reach even more mums on a mission.

Over the last 18 months the Mums Enterprise Roadshow has tested us in so many ways already and I realise it’s not going to be easy. But we will continue to work as hard as we can as we know it is THE number one exhibition in the UK for mums looking to start-up, grow and helps those who currently just don’t know. It WILL be widely recognised across the nation and it WILL have the support of some of the UK’s if not the world’s most awesome organisations. So watch this space.

I have learnt many things over the last two and a half years which isn't any time at all, but every day counts towards being in business for the rest of my professional life – I am in this for the long-haul and closing Little Fish is what needs to be done so we can #Shootforthemoon and take thousands of mums with us.

5 things I have learnt on my business journey so far

Know your numbers

This is a huge weakness for me as I am pretty sure I have Dyscalculia but believe me there is literally no way around it. Everything should start and stop with numbers and you need to understand the basic accounting tasks of running a business as you will most likely be the one managing it. Learn it or go home.

Success won't happen over night

We all dream of the over night success, that our video will go viral and we will have adoring fans sharing our content all night and day long. Well that is not likely going to happen. Shoot big but don't be disheartened if your marketing, press release, sales don't go how you had hoped. Business is a marathon not a sprint.....just keep going.

Be adaptable to change

Your business may end up in a totally different direction than where you were thinking 12 months ago. Don't worry and don't be scared, learn from your successes and failures. Use the information at hand to make the best decisions possible and take the business where it needs to go.

Listen to your gut

Ok so making the decision to close Little Fish actually goes against the numbers a little bit. Me and Lucy don't earn a living off Mums Enterprise yet and I was managing to earn some living through Little Fish. But my gut was telling me I must give Mums Enterprise everything I have. It's counter productive to spend time organising client events when I could be selling and securing sales for Mums Enterprise which will ultimately earn us a living. So I took a gamble and that is because deep down in my bones I know Mums Enterprise can and will be the success we dream because we love it and we know our events meet a very real challenge for thousands if not millions of women.

You can do it

You are an amazing person, you have talents that are going to waste right now even as you read this. You have the skills you need to develop that acorn of an idea in your head or to take your business to where you envision it to go. Life is very short and there are people out there who aren't as lucky as us, don't have as much time on this earth as us so let's not waste it. Turn that frown upside-down, get the courage back you had as a little girl going on the big slide or climbing that tree. You are strong, you can control your own destiny and believe me you can be fulfilled, be proud and you can be whatever you want to be. Now go do it xx

Thanks all and good night :-)
