Who can you help?
If you're freelance or work from home it can get a bit lonely, especially if you're used to an office environment. Dedicated coworking spaces are great but for many new entrepreneurs they are a big commitment, or don't offer enough flexibility.Freelance Folk helps to bridge this gap, and also gives you a reason to leave the house and talk to actual adult humans for a few hours! Our community is made up of a diverse range of freelancers and remote workers, including web developers, copywriters, translators, graphic designers, social media managers, virtual assistants, editors, marketers, photographers, business coaches and illustrators.
How can you help?
If you are feeling isolated or a bit stuck, it can really help to have a change of perspective and talk to people who understand what it's like to be self employed or work remotely. Bring your laptop (or the tools of your trade) to work and chat alongside other freelance types.People often say that they feel reinvigorated and inspired after coming along to our coworking sessions and chatting to other freelancers. And whilst it isn't a traditional networking event, it's a great way to build relationships; in fact, many Freelance Folk members have done business with each other. The online aspect of our community is currently growing too, with membership perks, blog posts, interviews and podcasts. We're also hoping to do more events for people who can't make our Friday afternoon Northern Quarter sessions.
What makes you unique?
Many people who come along to our coworking sessions don't feel comfortable with traditional business networking events, so Freelance Folk is a great way to meet people in a much more relaxed setting. If you're a bit less confident, you can sit with your computer and join in conversations when you're ready. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and you don't get that "cliquey" experience that you can have with some networks. It's definitely not the space for people who just want to thrust a business card in your face and pitch to you!We run our sessions at Ziferblat in Manchester's Northern Quarter, a fantastic community space where you pay for your time. For 8p per minute, you get unlimited drinks, snacks and cake plus fast wifi and lots of plug sockets. Perfect for freelancers! You can pop in and stay for as little or as long as you want.
Tell us why you decided to exhibit at the Mums Enterprise Roadshow in 2018
"Our popup coworking sessions have been running informally for a few years, and very much started as a side project. In 2017, after winning the IPSE Freelance Ambassador of the Year award, I saw that there was real potential to grow Freelance Folk and provide even more support to the freelance community. The Mums Enterprise Roadshow is a great way to raise awareness of our network and reach out to people who would really benefit from being a part of it."
